Opportunity:

  • As a Consultant in Neurophysiology, you will work constructively with the clinical physiologists to develop the service in a multidisciplinary fashion.
  • This trust wishes to appoint a replacement Neurophysiology Consultant to replace clinicians who have retired. These are replacement substantive posts to help our current establishment of Neurophysiology scientists to meet the demands of an increasing in- and out-patient workload, and to contribute to the development of a forward-thinking and ambitious department.

The Neurophysiology department is part of the wider Medicine Care Group, situated within the Cluster of Neurology & Stroke, Neurophysiology, Neuropsychology and Respiratory Medicine.
The Services provided include diagnostic testing on adults and children for the following conditions:

  • EEG: epilepsy, genetic disorders, memory disorders, acute meningitis, encephalitis, status epilepticus, post neurosurgical procedures and in critical care.
  • Prolonged EEG/video Telemetry & Ambulatory EEG studies: disorders of consciousness including epilepsy and complex epilepsy syndromes.
  • EMG/NCS: neurological, neuromuscular, rheumatological disease and trauma
  • Evoked Potentials: optic nerve disorders, spinal cord compression, congenital disorders, multiple sclerosis and other inflammatory conditions.
  • Visual electrodiagnostics: genetic and acquired retinal disorders.
  • Daytime and nocturnal sleep studies: narcolepsy, insomnia, hypersomnolence and parasomnias.

About the Trust:

  • The Trust employs 5,000+ staff, and has a budget of £380 million and 750 beds.
  • There are exciting plans to move the department to a near-by off-site location which will be purposely designed for the service. This is to necessitate that a small footprint be retained in the main hospital site to allow for a responsive in-patient service which will include NCS and EMG. These changes will facilitate the department’s aspiration to gain IQIPS accreditation once the service is established in the new facility.
  • Departments of Neurology provides a comprehensive neurological service for a catchment population of approximately 515,000

Essential criteria

  • The ideal candidate should have strong experience in the Consultant field of Neurophysiology.
  • Full GMC registration
  • To be on the Specialist Registrar for Neurophysiology (For the 6-12 month contract post this is not a requirement but previous consultant experience in NHS is a must )
  • Demonstratable evidence of good specialty training in neurophysiology.
  • Evidence of ability to perform advanced neurophysiological procedures relevant to the post

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of experience and ability in teaching.
  • Supervision of projects.
  • ATLS instructor.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Neurophysiology specialty
