The Role and Hospital
The Geriatric Medicine Unit requires involvement in the on-call GIM roster, outpatient clinics and wards.
This hospital provides a range of medical and surgical care to its patients. With 32 dedicated bed units, three operating theatres, a 16-bed day unit, dialysis chairs and chemotherapy, palliative care and rehabilitation units, they are well-placed to care for the diverse needs of our patients. Services are provided by Visiting Medical Officers, Registrars, Hospital Medical Officers, Interns, and a range of highly qualified nursing and Allied Health professionals.
Clinical Duties
Hours: Monday to Friday 0800 – 1700 (including public holidays)
- The primary role is to provide medical care to patients as a geriatrician while sharing responsibility with the team across acute, sub-acute and aged care and working effectively to continuously improve and develop the service
- Conduct ward rounds, outpatient clinics and post-discharge clinics
- Develop and maintain policies for admission, discharge and care of medical patients, in consultation with other appropriate service deliverers
- Prompt and effective liaison with Hospital staff, GPs and external organisations as necessary
- Maintenance of complete and thorough medical records
- Participation in teaching of doctors in training and undergraduate medical students
- Provision of an outpatient consulting service within their Specialist Clinic.
- Active participation in continuing medical education, quality improvement and clinical review activities
- Collaborative involvement with other clinicians and managers in service improvement initiatives
- Initiation of research and development projects and quality assurance programs associated with the speciality service
- Participation in relevant Hospital meetings
- Preparation of statements and reports as necessary
Requirements
- Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist in Geriatric Medicine who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
