The Role
Provide consultant-level management of inpatients admitted under a General Medical and Geriatric Unit at Royal Darwin and Palmerston Hospitals. This will encompass the assessment of acute general medical inpatients, appropriate investigation and formulation of a management plan. High level of leadership skills will be required to manage a large team of junior staff in a busy unit. An exceptional understanding of complex discharge planning and willingness to engage ambulatory care services to ensure timely discharges will be required in this challenging environment.

Geriatric medicine will include a mix of services in the; Acute Care of The Elderly (ACE) ward at PRH, which is run as an acute geriatrics service model, the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) ward at PRH, and also the Interim Care Ward at PRH.

As an experienced member of the team, you will perform care and advice on the management of patients with Geriatric and General Medicine conditions to colleagues both within and outside the specialty, and to those colleagues in geographically isolated centres in the Northern Territory. This may also involve consultation services in specialised areas of Geriatric medicine such as orthogeriatrics and falls.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA (Board certified) or New Zealand in the specialty of Geriatric Medicine and General Acute Medicine.

The Location
Unlike other Metropolitan cities in Australia where it can be easy to mistake one for another, in Darwin you experience an Australia that is like no other, with adventure at your doorstep. The Northern Territory is huge - but has a small population. Over 142,000 people live in the territory capital Darwin, with approximately another 100,000 living in remoter towns throughout the Territory such as Alice Springs, Katherine or even smaller, more remoter communities.

The unique healthcare and social issues of the population attract medical specialists from around the world. The medicine can be complex but hugely rewarding.

Darwin is a modern and very cosmopolitan city. It is extremely easy to get around and the lifestyle opportunities are amazing. Schools are great and there is a university.
