This post at a category C prison for men in Surrey typically involves seeing patients for a new assessment or follow up.  You will have your own office space with laptop and phone to allow some work conducted off-site.   You’ll also provide direct psychiatrist input into prisoners suffering from mental disorder with an element of crisis and risk management.
 
A bit more about the service…
 
You will work alongside a full time Consultant (0.6 wte) or junior doctor and undertake new assessments, follow-up appointments and input into the Healthcare Unit as required. You will have up to 4 appointments for a clinical session and the expected number of clinical appointments per day can be up to 8, but is typically between 2 and 6.  You will contribute to weekly MDT meetings with partnership agencies in the prison and also chairing a weekly zoning meeting/caseload review with the mental health team. You will also be expected to contribute to Parole Hearings and meetings where requested and coordinate referrals and transfers to outside agencies.
 
Some clinical duties...
    • Assessment (including the assessment of risk), treatment, care planning and multiagency liaison for people with mental health problems in the prisons.
    • Undertake Mental Capacity Assessments.
    • Contribute to planned emergency interventions.
    • Liaison with prisons, courts, statutory and non-statutory agencies, concerning all aspects of the mental health care management of residents with mental health problems in the prisons.
Requirements:
  • GMC registration with licence to practice 
  • Specialist Register (or eligible within 6 months of interview)
