An opportunity has arisen for the appointment of a Consultant Gynaecologist & Obstetrician at St Bernard’s Hospital, Gibraltar.
Gibraltar is a beautiful location to work in. It has a Mediterranean climate, breathtaking landscapes, beautiful beaches!
As the appointee, you will be responsible for providing a general obstetrics and gynaecology service to residents of all age groups in Gibraltar and an active participation in clinical governance responsibilities involving audit, teaching and administration, with special emphasis on clinical quality improvement, risk management and will share in the development and updating of clinical guidelines within the multidisciplinary team. The ideal candidate should have broad experience and should be a generalist. There is scope for subspecialty interest e.g. laparoscopic procedures and urogynaecology.
This is a replacement post in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The department is small, and most of the workload is the provision of general services. The jurisdiction and hospital are very small. The resident population is 35,000 rises to 45,000 or so with frontier workers (living in Spain but entitled to healthcare). Approx. 400 deliveries per year. The successful candidate will work with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists in providing consultant delivered care
The self-contained maternity unit has 11 in-patient beds and 3 delivery rooms. There is a small special care baby unit equipped to manage most premature babies above 34 weeks gestation. In utero or postnatal transfer of more premature babies occurs to a specialist hospital in Malaga.
The Gibraltar Health Authority's gynaecology service offers:
- Dedicated clinic slots for early pregnancy problems
- Urgent referrals seen within two weeks
- Dedicated antenatal clinics every week
- A weekly full-day gynaecology operating theatre session
- Direct on-call and emergency cover 24 hours per day, seven days per week
Main Duties:
- The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the on-call which is currently 1:3.5 non-resident with prospective out-of-hours cover for maternity and emergency gynaecology.
- There is no substantive junior medical cover in hospital specifically assigned to the Obstetrics and gynaecology team. Out-of-hours coverage for ward-level work is provided to an extent by the surgical junior doctor on call, but the service is mainly consultant-led.
Requirements:
- Full GMC Registered with a Licence to Practice
- Be on the GMC Specialist Register for Gynaecology
- Full Right to work in the UK

Return economy class airfares from the UK are payable in full. A rented accommodation allowance is payable solely whilst on a fixed term contract and upon submission of an official rental agreement and a Gibraltar Civilian Registration card.
Non-EU nationals should note that a Schengen Visa is required in order to be able to transit through Europe. This is obtained from the applicant’s place of residence. Please note that Schengen Visas cannot be obtained through Gibraltar
