Shortlisting an exciting opportunity in Queensland currently available for a Neurorehabilitation Consultant to come join the Rehabilitation Unit at the Mackay Base Hospital.

Mackay Base Hospital rehabilitation unit is a 10-bed service. It cares for a case mix of predominantly complex neurorehabilitation patients, as well as providing a service for consumers who are unable to step down to other centres (i.e. complex medical or surgical needs, dialysis, etc.).

The rehabilitation team includes a rehabilitation SMO, rehabilitation advanced trainee registrar, junior doctor (JHO or SHO), and occasionally a final year JCU medical student

The Role and Department

As a Consultant in Rehabilitation focused on Neurorehabilitation, your main duties are as follows:

  • Provide specialist rehabilitation care services within the MHHS to patients as part of multidisciplinary team to ensure the provision of appropriate patient care.
  • In addition, provide professional leadership within a specialist medical area and provide training, education and supervision to medical students from universities, junior medical staff and other health care providers.
  • The successful applicant will be an expert in neurorehabilitation, as well as have expertise in, but not exclusive to; amputees, lymphoedema, cancer rehabilitation, spinal medicine, post-surgical, congenital diagnoses (e.g. cerebral palsy, spina bifida etc.), traumatic brain injuries, musculoskeletal, burns, geriatrics, deconditioning and cardiorespiratory disease.
  • The rehabilitation clinician attends one half-day outpatient clinic which reviews patients post-discharge, as well as provides a general rehabilitation service for those consumers referred by GPs and non-GP specialists.
  • Additionally, if suitably qualified, the rehabilitation clinician has a monthly procedural botulinum toxin clinic for spasticity.
  • Within the rehabilitation team, you would be responsible for procedural and policy formation, and any innovation and research projects.
  • The rehabilitation physician is expected to oversee the accredited rehabilitation registrar training program at MBH. This includes formulation of a training program, teaching, accreditation, and funding paperwork, as well as annual recruitment to the position.

Requirements
Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship or eligibility for FFellowship or eligibility for Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
