The Role and Department

The MHHS Specialist Palliative Care Service (SPCS) aims to improve the quality of life for patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-limiting illness. This can be achieved through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and treatment of pain and other problems, in the physical, psychological and spiritual domains.

Your role will include the following key responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist palliative care services within the MHHS to patients as part of a multidisciplinary team to ensure the provision of appropriate patient care.
  • Alongside another palliative care physician, you will guide the management of palliative care patients in both the inpatient and community settings.
  • Your team will consist of a registrar trainee, nurses and allied health staff. You will be able to demonstrate professional leadership within a specialist medical area and make available training, education and supervision to medical students, junior medical staff and other health care providers.
  • Coordinating the delivery of care within the preferred location of care, which may include client’s home, residential aged care facilities (RACFs), hospitals, and/or Multipurpose Healthcare Services (MPHSs) located within MHHS catchment area.
  • Advocates for the optimisation of Advanced Care Planning across the district, facilitating the early recognition of a terminal diagnosis, identifying the clients wishes for Care at the End of Life and coordinating services to achieve best outcomes and client wishes.
  • Educate patients and their families in relation of their diagnosis, increasing health literacy to improve patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Applicants should be registered (or eligible for registration) as a specialist with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellowship or eligibility for Fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) with specialized skills, knowledge and clinical competence in the area of palliative care are mandatory and should hold an FRACP in Palliative Medicine or equivalent as an overseas trained specialist who has completed their training in either the UK, Ireland, Canada, USA or New Zealand.
  • High-level specialist clinical knowledge and understanding of palliative care.
  • High level of initiative and decision-making ability to make important clinical decisions on a day-to-day basis.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide expert consultancy/advisory services as required by both internal and external agencies that are relevant to the health industry
