About the Job

Opportunity:

  • As a Consultant in Paediatric Ophthalmology & Adult Strabismus you will work to be able to deliver secondary care ophthalmology, paediatric urgent care, strabismus services for children and adults, adult cataracts and retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatments.
  • It is a new post to support the growth of the department
  • Paediatric Ophthalmology service is set up as multidisciplinary clinics with Ophthalmologists, Orthoptists and Optometrists.
  • The Adult strabismus service includes allocated Advanced Orthoptists who are involved in clinics and are available on surgical days to adjust sutures as required. There is additional support from junior doctors, paediatric trained Advanced clinical practitioners (ACPs) and Specialty Doctors.
  • Full-time Consultants are contracted to 10 Programmed Activities (PAs). The offered job plan comprises of 8.5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC), including 1 PA of Patient-related Admin + 1.5 Supporting Professional Activities (SPA).
  • 5% On Call, Substantive

Department:

  • The Royal Eye Infirmary (REI) is the main ophthalmic centre for the district. The REI forms part of this University NHS Trust, with a catchment population for secondary work of approximately half a million. They have a wider Southwest Peninsula population of 2,000,000 people who have access to our full range of specialist services, including Major Trauma, Neurosurgery, and a level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care.
  • The REI provides Tertiary Services to the population of Devon and Cornwall in Paediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplastic, Cornea and Vitreoretinal Surgery. There are further opportunities to extend the present Service in tertiary roles
  • The new purpose-built REI is a very spacious ophthalmology centre comprising 3 operating theatres, an urgent care department, an outpatient department, and an optical dispensary.
  • The REI has a whole wing exclusively dedicated to Paediatric Ophthalmology, with its own imaging equipment in addition to orthoptic and optometry rooms. The paediatric waiting area is substantial and is well appreciated by parents and children.
  • State-of-the art facilities, boasting 3 large modern fully equipped operating theatre rooms with ceiling-mounted microscopes (Zeiss OPMI Lumera 700 with Callisto) and B&L Stellaris surgical equipment. Each operating room has its own preparation room and anaesthetic room, with a shared recovery area.
  • The department is well-equipped, including a RetCam, an eye tracker, 3 synoptophores, a computerized binocular vision analyser, a PASCAL laser, a YAG/SLT laser, 5 OCT machines (all Zeiss HD5000 and 6000, two with Angio-OCT), 4 Humphrey Visual Field analysers, 1 Goldman visual field analyser, Optos California and Zeiss Clarus, an anterior segment camera, 2 B-Scanners, Pentacam and a Specular Microscope.

Essential criteria

  • The ideal candidate should have strong experience in Sub-specialty training (fellowship level or equivalent) in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus
  • Full GMC registration
  • FRCOphth, MRCOphth or equivalent
  • Entry on GMC specialist register

Desirable Criteria

  • Evidence of experience and ability in teaching.
  • Supervision of projects.
  • Sub-specialty interest within paediatric ophthalmology to complement existing Consultants
