Opportunity:

Consultant Histopathologist, working within the Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology department at this NHS teaching hospital on the south east coast of England.

  • Full-time 10 PA vacancy for a Consultant Histopathologist with the opportunity to take on further clinical sessions once appointed.
  • 7.5 PAs NHS DCC These PA’s will include laboratory work (cut up), histology and Cytopathology reporting worked flexibly, participation in fixed MDMs (including preparation, attendance and follow-up and other appropriate clinical or other activity as negotiated with colleagues)
  • 1.5 PA Core SPA, 1.0PA Non-core SPA.
  • Provision, with other Consultant Histopathology colleagues, of a diagnostic histopathology and Cytopathology service with supporting clinical and administrative functions to this NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.
  • To deliver a timely diagnostic DMP service
  • Involvement in the provision of a frozen section service
  • To develop an interest in two or more areas of clinical practice, in line with DMPs plan to move towards specialisation and specialist reporting and lead this area where necessary
  • There is no commitment to Gynaecological Cytopathology or any on-call commitment

Department

  • The laboratory is a designated centre for many Cancer sites and has full UKAS Accreditation. The laboratory received over 35,000 Histology, approximately 1,600 Diagnostic Cytology and 900 autopsy requests in 2023. The department performs a wide range of molecular techniques. The department has recently moved to a subspecialty reporting system. Applicants from both specialised and more generalised backgrounds will be considered, but an interest in GI &/or dermatopathology would be preferable.
  • The department processes approximately 35,000 Histopathology, and 1,600 diagnostic Cytopathology requests a year. Approximately 20% of histology requests come from General Practitioners.
  • The department is entirely on-site, with the exception of the slide and block archive beyond 5 years, which is stored at a HTA accredited offsite facility - CellNass.
    Diagnostic and Molecular Pathology has a large cut-up room, a general laboratory and a separate laboratory for molecular biology, including immunohistochemistry. They have a comprehensive list of antibodies for diagnostic use.

***Please note that this is a substantive post, however, the Trust will consider applicants who are willing to undertake a Locum Consultant position on a fixed-term basis whilst they undertake their Portfolio Pathway to obtain Specialist Registration, which will subsequently allow them to apply on a substantive basis***

Essential criteria

  • The ideal candidate should have strong experience in the Consultant field, with a background knowledge of Clinical Histopathology.
  • Full GMC registration on the Speclasit Register
  • FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification
  • Applicants who are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT (or that they are eligible to apply for the Portfolio Pathway)
  • Able to develop an interest in contributing to the delivery of specialist diagnostic services
  • Experience of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching
  • Ability to advise and assist in the efficient and smooth running of the DDMP department

Desirable Criteria

  • Ideally, this specialist should have Experience in Diagnostic Cytopathology
  • Teaching qualification
  • Management qualification
