... it’s all happening in New Zealand this weekend!
Although there are still people who picture New Zealand as sleepy little backwater or Australia’s smaller, less interesting, neighbour these views really couldn’t be more misguided.
That’s not to say that New Zealand doesn’t have its fair share of vast, unpopulated (& stunning) wilderness, just that that’s not ALL it has to offer!
New Zealand has a vibrant cosmopolitan culture & rich Maori heritage, celebrated this weekend as part of Waitangi Day. Commemorating the signing of New Zealand’s founding document – the Treaty of Waitangi – in 1840, the 6th of February is a national holiday and sees a plethora of events to mark the occasion. From the official, traditional ceremony at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands to cultural performances, naval salutes, music festivals and even a ‘cheese-rolling’ competition, across the country there really is something for everyone to enjoy.
Sport is also a massive part of the Kiwi make-up & the Waitangi Day celebrations encompass everything from rugby to rodeos, with one of the biggest such events being the Wellington Sevens. Starting on Waitangi Day, 16 of the world’s top Sevens rugby nations battle it out over two days while fan enjoy world-class rugby on the pitch & extensive all day entertainment off of it!
